Chelsea 2-0 Levski Sofia
Chelsea comfortably confirmed their Champions League Group A top spot with a 2-0 win over Bulgaria's Levski Sofia on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge.
Two firsts became two goals as Andriy Shevchenko scored his first European goal in the Chelsea Blue and Shaun Wright-Phillips scored his FIRST ever goal for Chelsea too, after some 17 months and fifty plus appearances.
Credit where credit is due. Levski had lost ALL of their previous Champions League group games, after becoming the first team from Bulgaria to qualify for the Champions League, an achievement in itself!! But they came to Stamford Bridge and helped to contribute to an entertaining game of football and Levski was unlucky on a couple of occasions not to have scored a consolation goal for themselves; scant reward for their entertaining and enterprising endeavour.
The draw for the Champions League knockout stage is on Friday 15th December and the Champions League competition resumes matchday in February 2007. Given that the Champions can now focus on catching Man Utd at the top of the Premiership, the Carling Cup Quarter-Final against Newcastle two weeks today and the small matter of the FA Cup which begins on Saturday 6th January 2007.
Before that is the small matter of Chelsea v Arsenal this Sunday at Stamford Bridge. Hopefully a positive result against Emirates XI will finally end their hopes of Premiership ambitions for this season.
Countdown to the big match starts soon!!!
